Braves Back off Maholm

The Atlanta Braves have backed off requesting Paul Maholm in a trade with Mike Gonzalez for first basemen Adam LaRoche. This move has helped the trade talks between the Braves and Pirates once again pick up steam.

The three team deal involving the Pirates, Braves and Yankees has hit a serious snag because the Braves are asking for Castillo and Gonzo from the Pirates so they can then move Gonzo to the Yanks for the Cabrera and Proctor. The Braves would end up with Castillo, Proctor and Cabrera and that seems to be too rich for the Yanks.

The Pirates signed catcher Einar Diaz yesterday, possibly putting an end to Humberto Cota's run with the Pirates.

DO it. Move Freddy to 2B and Jose Bautista to 3B have X play RF and LaRoche 1b. And take your choice of Solomon or Capps to close. I'm just as comfortable with them closing as i am with gonzo.

I dunno but that sounds like a pretty decent line up to me

The Braves wouldn't end up with Gonzo, Proctor and Cabrera--it'd be Castillo, Proctor and Cabrera--but no matter what, it's too high a pricetag for LaRoche.

A Gonzo-Cabrera deal might be a better fit now if Schuerholz is going to demand more than Gonzo for LaRoche.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Roundtable will have something up discussing this before Christmas. Some big-timers from NYY, Atlanta, Arizona and Boston have volunteered to weigh in with their thoughts.

Thanks again for participating in PPR, guys, and keep up the good work. I check your blog daily for updates.

Cory,
You are right about gonzo, that was just a mistype as I even said the braves would get castillo. oh well, either way i dont think the pirates pull the trigger there and i am beginning to believe that the pirates arent going to trade gonzo at all. thanks for reading.

It'd be terrible PR if the Bucs started 2007 with Gonzo on the roster. For that reason alone, I'm confident that DL will get a deal done. It might not be for Cabrera or LaRoche, but we'll get some young hitting prospect in return.
